Trenchtown Social Club – feelgood Caribbean food & vibes

Goat curry with rice & peas, and dumplings. Gorgeous!

Caroline went to Trenchtown Social Club, the Caribbean restaurant in Tollcross, to chase away memories of ice cream with goat curry and iced tea.

Trenchtown is welcoming, friendly and sunny. It offers a wide variety of Caribbean food: jerks and curries, fish, vegetables and meat. There are a mains and plates, salads and lots of interesting vegetable sides and treats (watermelon chow – want!), and a handful of tempting deserts. We started with corn fritters and okra: delicious and crunchy.

Then I had the goat curry which comes with dumplings (deep fried bread dough) as well as rice and beans. It’s gorgeous! Hot, flavourful, the gravy thin and perfect for mixing with rice. My companion had the Montego style chicken, a creamy, rich dish. We had a side of sweet plantain and washed it all down with rum & Ting and Trench ice teas.

I was so full I could hardly walk when I left. Still, I’m going back for more goat curry soon.

About Caroline von Schmalensee

Cooking, eating and drinking is fun as well as necessary. I do food for fun and I write for a living. Good food makes the world a more delicious and satisfying place. Good writing, meanwhile, can make the world a less confusing place.
