On the Day of the Dead, also known as All Saints Day, I went along to the launch of a new Mexican bar, Diablo Loco, on South Clerk Street for a tequila soaked journey into the hottest fiesta this side of Tijuana.

Sometimes called Día de los Muertos, the Day of the Dead is a Mexican holiday celebrated throughout Mexico, which focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died, and help support their spiritual journey.

Enticed by a pre-delivery of the most beautifully iced cupcake, decorated with the common symbol of this festival, a skull, and a miniature bottle of tequila, it certainly set the tone for a great evening ahead. And what an evening it was.

Diablo Loco, Spanish for Crazy Devil, offers a true taste of Mexico on South Clerk Street, with a diverse drinks offering and complementary food menu, rich in authentic Mexican flavours and this new bar did not disappoint. I loved the interiors too.

Starting with a tequila tasting of three different tequilas in the basement party den, this set the tone of the evening.  With a myriad of tequilas and mezcals, showcased in an eclectic selection of Margaritas, from Smoked Paprika to Pineapple and Cardamon, it seemed rude not to partake of the odd one or two. I can thoroughly recommend their frozen ones and in the words of the song Tequila by Terrovision – ‘tequila it makes me happy’, although I’m not so sure the morning after!

Make sure you check out their food.  I can thoroughly recommend their pork belly croquettes, which were pure comfort food and the pulled chilli jackfruit tacos.  My only complaint, there wasn’t enough of it for the hungry, ravenous guests who swarmed on the food every time the plates were put on the table, although maybe it was the excess of the margaritas that had given us the munchies.

There’s talk of a range of Mexican-inspired entertainment throughout the week and weekend, so keep your eyes peeled on the Diablo Loco website.   When I left, the party was in full swing downstairs in the party den, with some very beautifully made up party revellers and also upstairs in the main bar, with ‘beats’ blaring out from the music deck, orchestrated by the live DJ.

If the launch night was anything to go by, this is certainly a bar to put on your hit list as it delivered really good things, including a somewhat sore head this morning!
