We love discovering local producers and were very pleased to discover Chocolala at the recent FEAST event at Jewel and Esk College. Having very happily munched my way through some of their lovely fresh tasty chocolates, I thought I’d get in touch with Jim Hogg to find out more about the gloriously named Chocolala which is based in Sanquhar, Dumfriesshire (very close to our favourites Sunnyside farm!)
Tell us a little about Chocolala and why you started it
We are a small devoted (but ambitious) chocolate makers who are passionate about all aspects of our chocolate making – from Fairtrade ingredients to inspiring fresh chocolates to unusual re-usable packaging.
We were inspired to set up the company due to the bland awful chocolate bars made on a production line with no love of taste or care and with 25 years in Food Industry we felt qualified to produce an inspiring product.
How do you describe your product to someone who hasn’t tasted it before?
Fresh clean and overall, refreshingly distinctive and gorgeous flavours. Our chocolates should be eaten within two weeks of delivery to experience the fresh flavours (if you can wait that long!)
How can we buy your products?
We currently sell online – many of our products are packaged in lovely metal boxes. We also produce bespoke orders.
We have recently started selling our bars and special occasion truffles in food halls. We are also starting to work with self–employed individuals to run Chocolala concessions (do get in touch!).
We also really enjoy doing special orders and can even put photographs on to chocolates!
Who inspires you the most?
In the chocolate world I’m inspired by William Curley. In the bigger picture— my father.
What are you most looking forward to this year?
A year where Chocolala becomes a recognised brand name and people ask for us by name.
What do you most like to eat?
Apart from chocolate some good old Fish and chips!
When can readers come and meet you?
We are at Ramsbottom Chocolate Festival, Bury , Lancs on April 16th and 17th , Tees Valley Garden Show, Apr 30th – 2nd May, Southport Food & Drink Festival 14th May
