Scotland has a lot of good gin. The latest brand to be launched is Kinrara, a London dry style highland gin. I went to the launch party at Kin, off Broughton Street.
It was a launch with a difference. Not only did we get ot taste the spirit, we also got to taste the heads and tails, the parts of the distilled liquor that are discarded. I enjoyed the tails – they had toffee and toasted oats in spades – but I can see why you discard it. The heart of the spirit is fresh, zingy with citrus and a certain warmth from rose hip and juniper. I enjoyed it in a G&T (the perfect serve is Fever Tree Mediterranean), in a dry martini and in a negroni with a hand-shaped ice ball. (Oh yes!)

Alice the still to the right, the rather attractive Kinrara bottle to the left. Mixologistsin the middle.
I look forward to seeing what else comes out of this distillery. The estate is near Aviemore and the gin uses botanicals foraged on the estate. Their future plans are to install whisky and rum stills. It’s all part of the overall plan to become the home of handcrafte highland spirits. Watch this space!
