Edinburgh Coffee Festival

"I don't drink tea, I only drink coffee." Not what you should tell someone who runs a tea shop.

“I don’t drink tea, I only drink coffee.” Not what you should tell someone who runs a tea shop.

Edinburgh Coffee Festival was a two-day event aimed equally to amateurs and industry with talks, samples and products. Christopher and I expected to come out jittery from caffeine but didn’t: it was really busy so instead of queuing for samples, we went to talks.

From Bada Budan we learned about ‘batch brewing’ (large and accurate filter coffee brewing) and from PekoeTea we heard about common tea myths. The tension between the two drinks is interesting: coffee’s big on measurements, digits and tech; tea’s about leaves and water.

Tip for next year: go first thing, before it gets too busy.

About Caroline von Schmalensee

Cooking, eating and drinking is fun as well as necessary. I do food for fun and I write for a living. Good food makes the world a more delicious and satisfying place. Good writing, meanwhile, can make the world a less confusing place.
