Fresh & Co: Best Breakfast in the Big Apple

Breakfast is one of my favourite dishes and this was probably reinforced when we recently went to New York. On our first morning there we were searching somewhere for breakfast. Initially I could only see the usual Starbucks and some Bagel place, which were not inspiring me when I looked on the other side of the road and saw – Fresh & Co – this was the one!

Fresh & Co is a chain of 16 stores only in New York, offering fresh food on the go. They have an amazing range of organic, seasonal dishes from great healthy salads and sandwiches bursting with colourful fillings, to zingy fruit juices and pretty good coffee too.

On our first visit I tried the quinoa and feta salad with fried runny eggs, which they rustled up fresh to order whilst the boys tucked into the obligatory pancakes, bacon and maple syrup. The combination of the quinoa, feta and egg was delicious and very filling. It certainly fuelled me up for the day. While the pancakes had to be the best we had on the trip, they were so light and fluffy and soaked up all the maple syrup. They weren’t accompanied by normal pork bacon, but rather turkey bacon, which didn’t taste the same as good old streaky, but it was interesting to try just the same.

When we returned to New York at the end of our trip we found another Fresh & Co near where we were staying and made a point of going back there for two out of the three days. I got hooked on their yogurt and bircher parfait pots, which was my vague attempt at being healthy during the trip. Just loved the combo of fruit, Greek yogurt, honey and either granola or bircher muesli. But, they’re not just breakfast buffs, they also do the most amazing salads and sandwiches for lunch. We did try their smoked salmon on rye with capers and cream cheese and this was also to die for.

It’s always nice to try new restaurants and share our leisurely dining experiences, but I quite liked the idea of breaking the mould on this occasion and talking about a healthy, organic, on the go food offering.

Although I won’t be rushing back to New York until the exchange rate improves, I will just have to hope that Fresh & Co might think of crossing the pond and opening up here soon! I absolutely loved this place.
