Berry Scrumptious – a perfect combination

Clare Rennie took some time out of her very busy pre Taste of Edinburgh festival preparations to tell us about Berry Scrumptious, a small company based on the family fruit farm in Aberdeenshire run by husband and wife team Claire & Ross Rennie.

The farm is situated on the north east coast of Scotland, around 1 mile from the coast and small harbour village of Rosehearty. The location so close to the sea means that they are protected from harsh frosts and so have a longer soft fruit growing season than is found inland.

They specialise in fresh chocolate covered strawberries but have developed the range to include chocolates made with our freeze dried berries.

What inspired you to start the company?

Love! Claire met Ross 10 years ago and started Berry Scrumptious when she moved to live with him on the family farm. What better way to eat a strawberry than dipped in chocolate?

What are you looking forward to this year?

We’re launching a range of truffles all with a berry theme which has been hard on the waistline with all the taste testing.

Because the fresh chocolate covered strawberries have such a short shelf life (1 – 2 days) they are not suitable for traditional retail and so they mainly work online. If you order before 10.30am we can deliver next day, Tuesday to Saturday.

The berry chocolate has a much longer shelf life and is sold in delicatessens and farm shops throughout Scotland.

What or who inspires you the most?

My mum! She ran Farmhouse B&B with 3 children and worked on the family farm with Dad – now that’s how to multitask!

What do you most like to eat?

My current favourite is freshly dug new potatoes with butter oozing over them! As a working mum I love anything that someone else cooks for me.

How do you describe your product to someone who hasn’t tasted in before?

Decadent indulgence!

We’re firm chocolate lovers, and the thought of chocolate strawberries – well! Just imagine if you had some of those delivered to you as a present!
