The Great Student Taco-Over at Diablo Loco

My student days may be long gone but I can still hold my own with students when it comes to drinking margaritas so I was delighted to be invited to join some other bloggers and influencers for the Great Student Taco-over at Diablo Loco on Edinburgh’s southside last week.

Their drinks pack a wicked punch

After a long day of marketing segmentation, a frozen margarita (or two) was just what the doctor ordered and boy, do these guys know how to mix a good cocktail.  Their passion-fruit margarita being my ultimate favourite certainly hit the spot with the strawberry coming a close second.

Situated on South Clerk Street, Diablo Loco is a local Mexican cantina and the perfect place for students but it’s also worth venturing from further afield as their food is ‘pretty hot’ and they serve an interesting array of tequila and mezcals too.

Diablo Loco’s eats will have you fired up

On the night in question, their tasty diablo had cooked up a spicy range of devilish Mexican style eats.  For any gluten-free eaters amongst you, their crispy corn-based nachos, with cheese and pico de gallo, (a fresh salsa of chopped tomato, onion, coriander, serrano pepper, salt and lime juice) and the tostadas are worth checking out.   We tried three different types:  a vegetarian one of sweet potato, pineapple and habanero aioli and pomegranate; and my favourite two, a spicy pulled pork, pickled onion and coriander; and a Yucatan chicken, habanero aioli with more jewels of ruby pomegranate.

We also sampled quesadillas made with Monterey jack cheese, guacamole, pico de gallo and pickled onion (v) and finished with two different types of tacos:  smokey chicken tinga, habanero cheese sauce; and a very spicy jackfruit with avocado mojo (v), which had all of our eyes watering and our mouths on fire, which only another margarita would cool down.

Diablo loco is a great addition to Edinburgh’s south side and with its vibrant interior and friendly staff, it’s definitely worth checking out.  I may not be a student anymore but I’ll definitely be returning as this is some of the best Mexican grub in the city.
