Secret Herb Garden – an oasis of peace

Imagine a warm, almost tropical place just a short drive from Edinburgh city centre. There’s a cute cafe comfortably furnished in a vintage style with seating for about 20. The first time I visited that’s as far as I got, after enjoying one of their cheese scones.

On a second visit, I ventured further to discover large greenhouses full of verdant greenery and more tables and chairs. That morning two children were having the time of their lives busy with watering cans watering the plants whilst their Mums relaxed and chatted. A little further, I discovered a several more comfortable seats amongst the plants with couples deep in conversation. In another space there’s a small teepee and toys. I really had to pinch myself as I discovered peaches growing – in Edinburgh! The Secret Herb Garden really is a magical place.

It is also a cook’s dream. The Secret Garden sells herb plants. There’s an almost bewildering choice. Not just one type of thyme but 6 or seven and the same for other common herbs such as mint and basil. There are also plenty of less usual herbs such as the lemon verbena which is now thriving in my garden. There are many well-known Edinburgh chefs who are also very happy with the fine herbs and edible flowers which are supplied to their kitchen by the Secret Garden.

If gardening is not your thing, have a look at the vintage items in the “rooms” to one side. Lovely furniture, garden equipment and more.

The cafe has a good range of cakes, drinks and coffees and teas and home cooked items for lunch. Sit and relax on the vintage style furniture. Every so often evening events are held which might just feature their home made drinks.

It’s fast become the “secret” place for tea for many people, old and young. I have to thank my friend L who is a carer and often takes her elderly clients there for telling me about it. I love that such a wide range of people feel utterly at home. it’s a real art creating such an atmosphere. I almost hate to share the secret. Do go soon. Visit the website for information on upcoming events.
