Dear Alfonso – An Italian Feast of Love and Laughter

Kerry was invited along to the launch of Mary Contini’s new book ‘Dear Alfonso – An Italian Feast of Love and Laughter‘ at Valvona & Crolla and it was the perfect opportunity to get her own copy of the book signed to add to her other Mary Contini books, Dear Olivia and Dear Francesca.

Joining other family members, friends and media, it was the perfect opportunity to get her own copy of the book signed and to indulge in some delicious eats and Prosecco, helpfully served by her delightful grandchildren, Alfonso Junior (Alfie), aged 5 and his wee sister.

In this new book, Mary explores her family story.  Based on a handwritten manuscript by her father-in-law, Carlo Contini, which had laid forgotten and unread for years, the book unfolds an incredible tale of poverty, adventure and survival, which Carlo had not shared with his family during his lifetime, but left as a moving and extraordinary legacy. Mary skillfully interweaves Carlo’s Italian story with the simultaneously unfolding story of Alfonso Crolla, who co-founded Edinburgh delicatessen Valvona & Crolla in 1934.
